Carestream Health and Jardim Zoológico in Lisbon have joined forces to perform an arthrodesis operation on the shoulder of a Sumatran tiger.
To support the veterinary surgeons performing the high-risk surgical procedure, the company loaned a DirectView Vita computed radiography (CR) system to facilitate a more precise diagnosis.
The main goal of the arthrodesis operation was to repair a chronic dislocation of the joint. The operation presented special challenges due to the large size of the tiger, which weighed in at more than 100 kg.
The Vita CR system, intended for small hospitals and specialty practices, including veterinary, can withstand extreme temperature variations and rough handling, according to Carestream.
