Tributes are being paid to the well-known German art collector and radiologist Dr. Karl Rosarius, who also went by the name of Charly.
Born in Cologne on 7 March 1938, he was the son of Lotte Rosarius and Dr. Alois Rosarius, a surgeon who practiced in Cologne, where Rosarius grew up, according to an article published on 17 January in The Provincetown Independent. He died on 8 December 2023 due to cardiac arrest, the report noted.
Rosarius co-founded a radiology practice in 1974 called Gemeinschaftspraxis für Radiologie und Nuklearmedizin (Community Practice for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine). The practice grew into a large institute, and Rosarius was the first to acquire a PET machine in Cologne, according to the article.
Rosarius also had an avid interest in art. A 2019 Art Blog Cologne interview saw him talk about the works of Cy Twombly and Claes Oldenberg, among others. He started collecting art as a student. He and his family also spent their summers in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and eventually moved to New York City after retiring.
Rosarius is survived by his wife, Bettina Rosarius, of Cologne and New York, and by five children: Leo Rosarius of Cologne, Alexandra Hecker of Cologne, Anton Rosarius of Düsseldorf, Oskar Rosarius of Munich, and Clara Rosarius of Ann Arbor, Mich. His funeral took place on 20 December 2023 at the Reformationkirche in Cologne.
