The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London officially opened its Gamma Knife Centre at Queen Square Radiosurgery Centre on 23 April.
The center houses the U.K.'s sixth Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion radiotherapy treatment system (Elekta). Providing treatment to both public and private patients, the Gamma Knife Centre is a partnership between the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), part of the University College London Hospitals National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust, and vendor Medical Equipment Solutions.
The Gamma Knife is used to treat brain metastases and other brain disorders. The NHNN has a collaborative relationship with Elekta and plans to begin a research program. NHNN's acquisition supports the government's efforts to improve access to advanced clinical techniques and to boost research and clinical efforts on neurological disorders.
The NHNN is the largest dedicated neurological and neurosurgical hospital in the U.K. The hospital treats more than 6,000 inpatients and 12,000 outpatients each year.
