Nuance gets medical reporting deal with UAE

The Ministry of Health of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said it is working with Nuance Communications and Emerging Technologies to implement state-of-the-art medical reporting across the country.

The project will voice-enable electronic medical record (EMR) systems in hospitals and clinics across UAE over the next year, the companies said. The first phase will equip 1,000 physicians and nurses with Nuance's Dragon Medical speech recognition software product. Then Nuance's regional distribution partner, Abu Dhabi-based Emerging Technologies, will manage implementation and train users, the companies said.

For its part, the UAE's Ministry of Health said the project will improve working conditions for healthcare professionals, with seamless communication that will allow the professionals to redirect their attention toward patients. Speech recognition will also reduce expenditures on documentation and speed up the availability of electronic record systems, enabling faster delivery of patient care, the ministry said.

Nuance and Emerging Technologies will be present at this week's Arab Health conference in Dubai, the companies said.
