Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,
Do international medical regulators share information? Are vetting procedures for doctors adequate?
The answer to both these questions appears to be no -- at least in the U.K., judged on the recent case of radiologist Dr. Sattar Kadhem. After he was struck off the medical registers in both Sweden and Norway in 2023, he continued working for a leading teleradiology company for over two years. Only a newspaper investigation led to his suspension and dismissal.
In another medicolegal story, a coroner reported that a dying woman had her cancer diagnosis delayed after radiology staff mistakenly scanned the wrong patient due to a failure to check the patient's identity. Check out our report.
Calls for a merger between radiology and pathology are gaining momentum, driven by the rapid evolution of AI and its capacity to unify image-centric disciplines, according to a new commentary by two experts. Their analysis has led to a lively debate on social media.
In other news, a study from Sweden has reinforced the importance of regular participation in breast cancer screening. The findings highlight the potential value of targeted interventions for high-risk groups, the authors noted.
The annual meeting of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) drew to a close on Wednesday. One of the highlights was new research into how GLP-1 receptor agonists can affect the interpretation of oncological FDG PET-CT scans.
