The European Society of Radiology (ESR) has posted a tribute to Dr. Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, PhD, who died on 18 July. He was 57.
Gambhir was born in Ambala, India, in 1962 and immigrated to the U.S. when he was 7 years old, the ECR said. He got a Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University in 1983, and he earned a PhD in biomathematics in 1990 and his MD in 1993 from the University of California, Los Angeles.
He served for many years in a variety of capacities at the Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging in Los Angeles. In 2003, he was named director of Stanford's Molecular Imaging Program and head of nuclear medicine; in 2011, he became chair of Stanford's department of radiology. In 2016, he established the Precision Health and Integrated Diagnostics Center.
"Dr. Gambhir was an inspiration to all who knew him, a brilliant mind and a true leader of our field," the ESR said in its tribute. "His passing is a great loss to the radiology community as a whole. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, Aruna, and his family. He will be missed but not forgotten."
