What does the future hold for the treatment of patients with pancreatic cancer? How is the role of interventional radiology (IR) evolving? Prof. Okan Akhan, from Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey, has addressed these questions in a free podcast from the British Institute of Radiology (BIR).

Courtesy of BIR.The 33-minute discussion focuses on percutaneous biopsy and why certain patients may benefit from this treatment, common potential postoperative complications and how these can be managed, and palliative care using IR. It also covers treatment options for patients with locally advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma as well as patients with metastatic disease.
"Interventional radiology provides a wide range of safe and effective treatment modalities for pancreatic cancer patients in every step of the disease, starting from initial diagnosis to the end," Akhan said. "Despite the poor prognosis and high mortality of the disease, IR provides highly effective, minimally invasive solutions for pancreatic cancer patients to improve their quality of life."
