Mātai, a New Zealand-based medical imaging research center that focuses on the brain, heart, and body, has opened its doors.
Mātai will focus on improving the diagnosis and treatment of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cardiovascular disease, as well as study child well-being. The center will also focus on other health issues that affect the Tairāwhiti-Gisborne community.
CEO and director of research Dr. Samantha Holdsworth is originally from Gisborne. She is an expert in human brain imaging and a pioneer of superfast, high-resolution MRI methods and amplified MRI, a new method of visualizing brain motion, according to a press release from the company. She worked previously at Stanford University.
Mātai is also seeking a radiologist with an interest in imaging research to work there.
