The International Conference on Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac CT has started in Berlin, and among the scientific highlights is new research from Hannover, Germany, about an established treatment for cancer patients that can offer a novel therapeutic approach to decrease inflammation in the atherosclerotic plaques of patients with cardiovascular disease. In another study being presented at this week's meeting, U.S. researchers are proposing a new protocol for SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) that would result in significant cost savings, less radiation exposure for patients, and total test time reduced from three hours to approximately one hour. Findings from the retrospective study that evaluated more than 24,000 patients over six years potentially could eliminate the need for imaging in 6% of the 9 million SPECT MPI studies performed annually in the U.S. Find out more here.
Radiation can cause DNA damage that, if it doesn't kill the cell and isn't repaired, results in a population of mutated cells, and these abnormal cells may eventually give rise to clinical cancer, according to a U.K. expert. Dutch researchers have found that changes in F-18 fluorothymidine (FLT) uptake on PET during early radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy are a strong indicator of the long-term outcomes of head and neck cancer patients.
