Fraunhofer MEVIS plans open house

The Fraunhofer Institute for Medical Image Computing MEVIS will be holding an open house on 15 September to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

The celebration will provide an overview of the institute's projects for visitors interested in the field and cooperation partners. Experts will use partially interactive demo stations to present a selection of their current research and development projects, such as the following:

  • Web-based software to facilitate radiologist access to MRI data in the National Cohort (NAKO) German health study. Launched last year, the NAKO study will gather MRI data of up to 30,000 subjects in order to gain valuable insight into the formation and development of diseases. The institute's Web-based software automatically analyzes image quality and enables radiologists to look at the images via a Web browser without having to download the source data, according to Fraunhofer MEVIS.
  • A tablet computer app designed to support doctors in complicated liver surgeries. Surgeons can use the app to compare the current situation during procedures with planning data; the tablet's integrated camera can be used to film the liver during the operation and planning data can be superimposed on the recording. The app can also estimate outcomes if a tumor is judged to be larger than initially thought and additional vessels need to be removed, Fraunhofer MEVIS said. Visitors to this demo station will be able to test the app on an artificial organ.
  • Software for breast cancer diagnostics that can automatically transfer the position of a tumor from one imaging modality (such as mammography, ultrasound, or MRI) to another.
  • Its software assistant for interventional radiology (SAFIR), which supports planning of patient-specific treatment of liver tumors with radiofrequency ablation. Visitors to this demo station will be able to create a treatment plan using SAFIR.

The open house will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on 15 September at the Universitätsallee 29 in Bremen, Germany.
