A proton therapy center has opened in Prague, using equipment from radiopharmaceutical provider Ion Beam Applications (IBA).
The Proton Therapy Center Czech is privately owned and operated. It was developed in partnership with the faculty of medicine at Prague's Charles University and the faculty of nuclear sciences and physical engineering at Czech Technical University. When fully operational, the center is expected to treat about 2,500 cancer patients a year predominantly from the Czech Republic, the Russian Federation, and the rest of Europe.
The center has five patient treatment rooms. The IBA-installed proton beam system includes a cyclotron, beam line, three gantry treatment rooms, and fixed-beam treatment room. IBA's pencil-beam scanning dedicated nozzle technology is also being used.
