Radiation oncology firm Elekta announced that University Hospital La Timone in Marseilles is celebrating its 20th year as a Leksell Gamma Knife user, and during 2012 will perform Gamma Knife radiosurgery on its 12,000th patient.
The hospital was also the first in the world to purchase Elekta's most sophisticated radiosurgery platform, the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion. And in January 2012, it deployed its second system, which will enable as many as 10 patients to be treated a day.
The number of the hospital's patients with brain metastases is increasing dramatically, according to Dr. Jean Régis, a neurosurgeon and Gamma Knife program director at the hospital. This includes patients with multiple brain metastases, who have an average of three lesions that require treatment.
In addition to metastases, University Hospital La Timone also has performed Gamma Knife radiosurgery to treat a spectrum of benign and malignant vascular and functional disorders.
