Radiation oncology and x-ray firm Varian Medical Systems has unveiled plans to acquire medical imaging software developer MeVis Medical Solutions.
Varian will offer 17.50 euros ($22.05 U.S.) per share for MeVis, for a total estimated transaction of 30 million euros ($37.8 million U.S.).
MeVis, based in Bremen, Germany, provides image processing software and services that are marketed to imaging equipment manufacturers for breast cancer screening, as well as lung, liver, prostate, and colon cancer. The acquisition would also include the proprietary MeVisLab software platform.
According to Varian, MeVis software for breast cancer screening has been sold to some 10,000 clinics around the world.
Sunny Sanyal, president of Varian Imaging Components, said that if the deal is completed, MeVis would continue to develop cancer screening and image processing applications at its current facility in Bremen. Varian's Imaging Components business provides x-ray tubes, flat-panel detectors, and image processing software and workstations for digital imaging.
Varian plans to file a tender offer for MeVis in mid-January 2015, and it anticipates completing the acquisition in April 2015.
