Dear Advanced Visualization Insider,

Computer-aided detection (CAD) software has been shown to improve lung nodule detection on chest radiographs. But can it do better than double reading by two human readers?

Not yet, according to researchers from Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. In a study presented at ECR 2014, the Dutch team reported that while CAD did boost mean reader sensitivity for detecting lung nodules, the improved performance still didn't reach the level achieved from double reading. Find out all the details.

In other articles this month in your Advanced Visualization Digital Community, 3D visualization techniques played an important role in a successful facial reconstructive surgery recently performed on a U.K. patient after a motorbike accident. Contributing writer Becky McCall has all the details in her article, which you can access by clicking here.

Also, a Swedish researcher won the top prize in the 2014 Wellcome Image Awards competition for his 3D dual-energy CT scan of a patient who received a mechanical heart pump while waiting for a heart transplant. The award-winning image was a 3D reconstruction of the dual-energy CT scan, with the heart pump, breastbone, collarbone, and bones of the rib cage made opaque.
