Why Paul McCoubrie doesn't like 'trainees'; JFR 2014 news roundup & analysis

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

In healthcare, the term "trainee" is used widely across Europe, but often it's a misleading title for a relatively experienced doctor. In such cases, the term confuses patients and staff and doesn't do justice to the individual, says columnist Dr. Paul McCoubrie.

He urges everybody to think carefully before using the term "trainee." To read more, click here.

The French national radiology congress, the JFR, ended on Monday and attracted more than 17,000 delegates, according to the organizers. One of the highlights of the four-day meeting was the use of cardiac imaging in the emergency room, and we've got an article on this topic. Go to our Cardiac Imaging Community, or click here.

The virtual autopsy was another topic that grabbed the attention of JFR delegates. Compared with colleagues in Switzerland and Scandinavia, French radiologists may lack experience in this field, but there is a growing realization that virtual procedures represent an area of great potential. A multidisciplinary approach and having the right equipment are vital for success, according to researchers from Marseille. Find out more in our CT Community, or click here.

Also at JFR, the findings of an important new teleradiology survey were presented. The results appear to underline how the real situation is very different from what some people have in mind. The plan is to extend the survey to the rest of Europe. Visit our PACS Community, or click here.

Finally, Dr. Anagha Parkar, our editorial advisory board member from Bergen in Norway, has provided a fascinating interactive case report about a 79-year-old man with malaise and weight loss for the past three months. Take the challenge in our Case of the Week feature. And if you'd like to develop a case yourself, please do feel free to contact me.
