Week in Review: Imaging advances in dense breasts | MRI of the musical brain | U.K. tribunal gives verdict

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Mammography screening does not perform well in women with extremely dense breasts, so the positive results from recent MRI screening trials were most welcome. The findings led the European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) to recommend in March 2022 that MRI be used for breast cancer screening in these cases.

Against this background, a large new study from Germany is bound to generate considerable interest. Researchers found that digital breast tomosynthesis plus synthesized mammography can detect more invasive breast cancers in dense breasts than digital mammography alone. France's national radiology meeting, JFR 2022, begins today (7 October), and we'll be posting video interviews and reports throughout the congress. As an appetizer, don't miss our special report from France about functional MRI examinations of musicians' brains. We've interviewed the influential researcher Prof. Denis Le Bihan, PhD.

A U.K. tribunal's decision to strike off from the register a leading ob/gyn specialist is likely to send shockwaves through the United Arab Emirates (UAE). As of 6 October, no details were available about the misconduct that led to the erasure, and the clinician has the right to appeal. The case comes at a time when U.K. radiology is establishing much closer links with the UAE.

When it comes to artificial intelligence (AI), Dr. Hugh Harvey is always worth listening to. In a forthright talk at the British Institute of Radiology's annual congress, he shared his latest thoughts on the fast-emerging AI sector.

Hybrid imaging continues to make progress in prostate cancer, as confirmed by a study that tested a new technetium 99m-labeled SPECT/CT radiotracer designed to reveal prostate-specific membrane antigen activity on cancer cells. Get the full story in our Molecular Imaging Community.

JFR 2022 runs until 10 October, so please do remember to check back for our coverage throughout the conference.
