ROME - The longstanding barriers between radiology and cardiology are gradually breaking down, cardiac imaging pioneer Dr. Stephan Achenbach said at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) annual congress on Tuesday.

"This is really only a gut feeling, but I think more collaboration is going on nowadays," he noted in an interview with AuntMinnieEurope.com Editor-in-Chief Philip Ward. "The bad turf wars of about 10 years ago are pretty well a thing of the past."

Achenbach, who is vice president of the ESC and chairman of the department of cardiology at the University of Erlangen in Germany, admitted that very few radiologists come to the ESC congress. But he noted healthy cooperation does take place at more focused cardiac radiology meetings.

"Just here yesterday, I met with a radiologist: Jonathon Leipsic from Vancouver," he added. "Some of my best friends are even radiologists!"

We will post a longer interview with Achenbach after ESC 2016.
