Philips sells MR-HIFU unit in Jordan

Philips Healthcare has sold an MR-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) system to Farah Hospital in Amman, Jordan.

Philips says Farah Hospital will be the first facility in the Middle East to operate a Sonalleve MR-HIFU system, which delivers focused high-intensity ultrasound under MRI guidance. At Farah, the system will be used to expand the therapy options for women with uterine fibroids.

MR-HIFU can achieve tissue temperatures in excess of 65° Celsius, high enough to kill tumor cells without damaging surrounding tissue. MRI provides real-time imaging of soft-tissue structures so the HIFU beam can be focused on the tumor. MR can also spatially map local tissue temperatures in order to provide real-time feedback for controlling the applied temperature profiles, according to the company.

In other Middle East news, the company has signed a relationship with Care IQ to offer local healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia customized products and services to facilitate collaboration, enable information sharing and targeted communication between clinicians, and improve operational effectiveness and streamline clinical processes.
