Dear CT Insider,

Radiation dose continues to be the overriding consideration of both CT users and developers, and this topic has rightly dominated our extensive coverage of the modality during the past month.

At last week's U.K. Radiological Congress, early results from the new national CT dose survey highlighted the modality's continued growth -- as well as increasing radiation exposure to patients and staff. This is the first such survey conducted since 2003, so some significant trends can be determined. Click here for the details.

The European Society of Radiology has issued a white paper on radiation protection as an online-first publication in its own journal, Insights into Imaging. The paper covers the role of justification, evidence-based referral guidelines, optimization, diagnostic reference levels, clinical audits, and quality assurance programs. At the International Pediatric Radiology Congress, held in London in late May, a half-day radiation safety summit proved popular. CT pioneer Willi Kalender, PhD, gave some practical guidance on how to reduce dose, as well as some reassuring words in the current climate of fear. To find out more, click here.

The annual meeting of the International Society for Computed Tomography is taking place in San Francisco this week. A presentation on Monday showed that model-based iterative reconstruction can reduce dose to levels that could alter how CT is used in the future. Find out more here.

Cardiac CT featured prominently at the recent British Institute of Radiology President's Conference. Take a look at our three news reports, which addressed incidental findings, promoting collaboration, and virtual surgery/3D modeling.

The first installment of our new history column focused on the early days of CT, and you won't want to miss this fascinating tale, recounted by Dr. Adrian Thomas. The images are worth a look in their own right, particularly the brochure cover for the historic EMI 1010 scanner, signed by Godfrey Hounsfield. Click here for the details.
