Varian wins German proton therapy contract

Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, said it has won an installation of its intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) system at a Munich-based cancer clinic.

Rinecker Proton Therapy Center has become the first hospital in the world to offer IMPT to treat patients, according to Varian.

Proton therapy destroys tumors by delivering heavier particles that stop at specified depths within the anatomy, thus reducing exposure to healthy tissue. Varian's scanning-beam technology enables the modulation of the proton beam by modulating dose levels on a spot-by-spot basis throughout the treatment area, the company said.
