SERAM highlights growing trend in muscle tears

Muscle tears in older patients have increased in recent decades, according to a statement issued by the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM).

Dr. Javier Fernández Jara, a musculoskeletal radiologist at Sanitas La Zarzuela University Hospital, noted that several factors are contributing to this trend. These include greater longevity and active aging, older adults being more physically active today, an increase in diagnoses, and advances in imaging technologies in detecting muscle tears.

Jara added that muscles not only improve joint stability but also prevent cumulative damage, promoting greater functionality and quality of life. He also highlighted how MRI and ultrasound are dynamic imaging techniques that can diagnose muscle tears early and evaluate factors linked to muscular comorbidities.

The full statement can be found on SERAM's site.
