The British Journal of Radiology has published a consensus statement about reporting incidental coronary, aortic valve, and cardiac calcification on nongated thoracic CT.
The statement was crafted by the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging (BSCI)/British Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (BSCCT) and the British Society of Thoracic Imaging (BSTI).
The three professional groups recommend the reporting of coronary artery calcification (CAC) when imaged on all CT scans and offer guidance on how to categorize the severity of CAC by patient.
"Furthermore, we recommend that reports include recommendations for subsequent management, namely the assessment of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors and, if the patient has chest pain, assessment as per standard guidelines," wrote a team led by Dr. Michelle Williams, PhD, of the University of Edinburgh in the statement posted on 29 October.
