VIENNA - Toshiba Medical Systems Europe of Zoetermeer, Netherlands, is launching a new portable ultrasound scanner, called Viamo, at this week's European Congress of Radiology (ECR).
Viamo shares its core imaging engine with Toshiba's Aplio XG premium ultrasound scanner, and Aplio techniques such as pulse subtraction and QuickScan have been migrated to the new system.
Viamo also makes use of a dedicated series of Aplio XG transducers with small form factors. Users can connect Aplio XG specialty transducers to Viamo via a cart-mounted transducer connector.
In addition, Viamo can be completely operated via its 15-inch monitor with touchscreen functionality for improved workflow and ease of use. Viamo's console features only 15 hard keys, which can be folded away when the system is operated in tablet mode.
Toshiba believes that Viamo is suited not only for mobile clinical and outpatient applications, but also for physician's offices where space might be an issue.
In other Toshiba ECR ultrasound news, the company is introducing Precision Imaging, a new technique for Aplio XG that uses multiresolution signal processing technology to analyze ultrasound images on the fly and simultaneously at various orders of spatial resolution to separate structure from clutter or noise.
Precision Imaging provides improved image contrast with more detail and sharper delineation of layers and boundaries, the company said. Widespread areas such as organs appear more homogeneous and smooth. Delimited objects like lesions or vessels show improved contrast, and small objects such as contours or layers are sharpened and more coherent.
The technique can be combined with other Toshiba imaging functions such as differential tissue harmonics or ApliPure+, as well as imaging modes such as color Doppler or 3D/4D.
