A radiologist has recounted his decision to relocate to the U.K. in search of a more accepting environment where he could live authentically as a gay man, in a recent Royal College of Radiologists blog post.
Dr. Abhishek Mahajan is a consultant radiologist at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool. His story, “Silence to authenticity: A radiologist’s journey to acceptance and advocacy,” was posted on 11 October, National Coming Out Day.
Mahajan worked as a consultant radiologist and professor in India from 2011 to 2022.
"Radiology has always been my passion, but living as a gay man in a conservative society meant I often had to conceal my true self," he noted. "The fear of societal stigma and professional repercussions kept me silent for far too long. I find myself reflecting on the importance of embracing one's true identity. ... My journey has reshaped my understanding of authenticity, especially within the context of my medical career.”
