Social accountability can play role in radiography education

Researchers are calling for social accountability in radiography in two papers published in the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences and Radiography.

The group, led by Wiam Elshami, PhD, from the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, has explored this topic because social accountability, which mandates that medical schools address community health priorities, has not been explored deeply in research.

In the paper published in the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences, the team discussed strategies for embedding social accountability into schools. This includes community-based education, service learning, and case-based approaches to understand and address real-world healthcare disparities.

In the paper published in Radiography, the authors performed a scoping review and identified the following themes from prior research: compassionate communication and patient-centered care, cultural sensitivity and equity, environmental sustainability, education and training aligned with community needs, and research addressing healthcare needs and disparities.
