ISRRT to recognize dose reduction

Entries are now being accepted for the second annual DoseWise Radiographer of the Year Award competition, put on by Philips Healthcare parent Royal Philips Electronics and the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISRRT).

The award recognizes excellence in maximizing patient and clinical safety while adhering to the as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) principle in an x-ray environment, Philips said.

This year's competition asks participants to describe in 500 characters or fewer a best practice example of how they adhered to the ALARA principle in a clinical environment. Peers vote for the entries that will move onto the finals, and the winner will receive a sponsored trip to the 2012 ISRRT World Congress in Toronto in June.

Last year's winner, Yogesh Jha, a radiological technologist from the Dr. Iwamura Memorial Hospital and Research Center in Nepal, was selected because he noted that despite a challenging working environment, a number of simple techniques can limit patient exposure during radiological examinations. He worked with referring clinicians within the hospital to ensure secondary exams were ordered only when necessary to ensure improved outcomes, and committed to providing patients with more information about their exams via posters throughout the waiting areas, according to ISRRT.

Entry submission for this year's competition closes on 30 November. For more information, visit the DoseWise award website.
