In a review of more than 46,000 medical images for nearly 27,000 patients, Kerry University Hospital uncovered 10 missed diagnoses by the radiologist who initially evaluated the images, according to a report in the Irish Times.
The hospital conducted the review in lieu of incorrect diagnoses by a locum radiologist who signed off on roughly 150 scans per day over a period of 16 months -- more than doubling the average workload for a radiologist in the Republic of Ireland, the newspaper noted. The hospital has also provided an opportunity for counseling to each of the 10 individuals with missed diagnoses.
The clinical subgroup in charge of the audit completed their re-evaluation on 15 February, and the images will undergo an additional quality-assurance process before the end of March, the hospital said in a statement.
