The British Institute of Radiology (BIR) has published a position statement on the selection and acquisition of personal protective equipment, particularly lead aprons.
The current standard for determining lead equivalence, known as BS 2014, requires that all lead aprons be CE Marked. Older lead apron models are occasionally preferred due to their lighter weight and lower cost, according to the BIR. All new lead apron purchases, however, must comply with BS 2014 regulation effective April 2019.
There is no requirement to replace older lead apron models until called for by regular wear and tear.
