The Radiological Society of the Netherlands has issued a new set of guidelines on the safe use of iodine-based contrast media.
The summary of the recommendations from multidisciplinary clinical evidence includes indications and measures to prevent postcontrast acute kidney injury when iodine-based contrast agents are administered.
The document provides guidance for contrast media use for patients with type 2 diabetes who use metformin and patients who undergo chronic dialysis, as well as risk stratification and tools to prevent postcontrast acute kidney injury.
The summary of recommendations "should not be used alone," the authors noted. "In medical decision-making the personal setting and preferences of the patient should be taken into consideration. Treatment and procedures of the individual patient rely on mutual communication between patient, physician, and other caregivers."
