Compulsory audits loom | 4 ways to grow hybrid imaging | Breast tomosynthesis advances

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Love them or loathe them, clinical audits are going to become much more common in the future. Under European Union regulations, every radiology department will need to undergo an audit by 6 February 2018. Each country will decide on the remit of the audits and how they're implemented.

The well-known Belgian radiologist Dr. Jan Schillebeeckx welcomes this trend and believes audits can bring real benefits. To find out more, click here.

Many of you enjoyed our recent report about the first anniversary of the European Society for Hybrid Medical Imaging. Now we've posted an article by nuclear medicine expert Dr. Arturo Chiti from Milan about how best to develop hybrid imaging. As the editor in chief of the European Journal of Hybrid Imaging, he is well placed to comment. Go to our Molecular Imaging Community, or click here.

Digital breast tomosynthesis continues to show promise. Two important studies from Italy and Norway were presented at last month's ECR 2017, and they are worth a close look. You can do so in the Women's Imaging Community, or by clicking here.

New research also was unveiled at ECR 2017 involving prostate computer-aided detection (CAD) based on artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning. A team from the University of Rome looked at about 100 patients with suspected prostate cancer and applied its AI-based CAD system to MR images of potential tumor regions identified by expert readers, hoping to improve the yield of core biopsies to detect malignancy. Finally, don't miss an informative piece about how whole-spine sagittal MRI of patients with degenerative diseases can detect significant incidental findings. Investigators looked at the outcome of nearly 1,500 patients examined in 2015. Visit the MRI Community, or click here.
