Dear Advanced Visualization Insider,

Alzheimer's disease remains difficult to diagnose, especially in the early stages. But researchers in Spain are making progress using advanced neural networks that analyze MRI and PET images using the power of 3D.

In their study, the researchers developed multiple brain classification methods based on deep-learning technologies and applied them to brain images. Their technique showed classification accuracy as high as 95% for distinguishing patients with Alzheimer's disease from those in a control group, and slightly lower accuracy distinguishing patients with mild cognitive impairment. Find out how these institutions have improved on early efforts to diagnose the disease, and why it matters, by clicking here.

In more news from Spain, another group has developed a software platform that makes it easier to integrate different computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithms into PACS software. The service, which will be offered to different hospitals in the region of Galicia, will allow end users to request and obtain CAD results in any modality. Click here for the details.

In Germany, a new reconstruction algorithm for CT fluoroscopy demonstrated a significant reduction in noise and radiation dose compared with filtered back projection. The algorithm also boosted reader confidence as you'll see by clicking here.

Meanwhile, investigators in the U.K. and Singapore have built a very useful tool that actually predicts survival in pulmonary hypertension patients based on 3D heart motion analysis. The machine learning-based survival model uses cine MR images, adding incremental prognostic power to traditional risk assessment methods, and could potentially be used to guide patient management. Finally, the market for machine learning and artificial intelligence-based software looks very promising. The bottom lines are, of course, money and practice efficiency, and software's potential to relieve the exhausting radiology workflow crunch. Decision support tools are set to hit the market in a big way, too. Learn more here.
