Proton therapy developer Ion Beam Applications (IBA) has signed a deal to develop a cyclotron-based carbon therapy system in the Normandy region of France.

IBA's Normandy Hadrontherapy subsidiary signed the agreement with the Normandy Region and several other private and public players in Normandy for the hadron therapy system, which will be installed in Caen.

Hadron therapy with carbon ions is being used at several centers globally; it functions in the same way as proton therapy but is particularly well-suited for radiation-resistant tumors.

IBA will work with industrial and public partners to design, develop, and install hadron therapy systems in Normandy. At the Caen site, the company will install one of its Cyclone 400-MeV multiparticle superconducting isochronous cyclotrons that is able to accelerate carbon ions and other particles including protons.
