Proton therapy developer Ion Beam Applications (IBA) said it has been selected to install new proton therapy centers in Belgium and Spain.
IBA was selected as the preferred vendor by four Belgian universities and the Wallonia Region government, and will be providing its ProteusOne single-room compact proton therapy system. Although it will also treat patients, the center will be dedicated to research and development of new proton therapy applications and techniques, according to IBA.
The Wallonia region will invest 47 million euros in the research project, which will include the IBA technology, research program, maintenance contract, and related equipment. The center is expected to be operational in 2020.
IBA has also signed a contract with a Spanish hospital group to install a proton therapy center in Madrid.
The group, Quirónsalud, will install IBA's Proteus One device, which will include the company's latest-generation pencil-beam scanning technology, conebeam CT capabilities, and a long-term maintenance agreement, according to the firm. It is the first such device in Spain, IBA said.
The hospital plans to start treating patients in 2019.
