The École Polytechnique Fédérale (EPFL) of Lausanne, Switzerland, has unveiled a new high-tech, low-cost, x-ray imaging device designed specifically for developing countries.
The fully functional prototype of the GlobalDiagnostiX comes from EPFL's Cooperation and Development Center and is intended for harsh tropical climates, high temperatures, humidity, and dust.
It features an examination stand, which was designed to avoid any electrical controls. It can move up, down, and turn depending on the body part to be x-rayed. The radiographic image sensor also has been completely redesigned to withstand shocks, as well as the temperature and humidity.
Developers estimate the total cost of ownership, including purchase and maintenance over 10 years, is 10 times cheaper than the existing equipment.
