Philips Healthcare has signed a 14-year agreement with Stockholm County Council (SCC) to fit out a new site for Karolinska University Hospital and to collaborate on research and development.
New university hospital facilities are currently under construction in Solna, part of the metropolitan area of Stockholm. The hospital is expected to open in late 2016, Philips said.
The deal includes an innovation program as well as education and the procurement, installation, maintenance, upgrading, and replacing of most of the medical imaging equipment for the new university hospital, Philips said. The new hospital will have access to imaging technology and services, including those of other vendors, for a multiyear term at predictable costs, according to the vendor. Managed imaging equipment services include procurement, system integration, and updates.
The company will also establish a research and innovation hub at the new hospital with the goal of bringing researchers from the medical technology industry, hospital, and academia together. The firm said it believes the hub will contribute to the faster translation of new research findings into new therapeutic and treatment methods.
MRI, CT, ultrasound, and interventional x-ray systems procured under the contract will be owned by SCC and will be used throughout the new hospital in radiology, cardiology, neurology, oncology, and pediatrics for both patient care and clinical research, Philips said. Because the new hospital will be operated with a low environmental impact, Philips said it will provide a range of its Green imaging systems.
The SCC also has an option to extend the contract another six years. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
