Siemens Healthcare said it has developed an improved detector with a new electronic design for its CT scanners.
The new Stellar detector can transmit analog signals from the photodiode with minimal wiring, allowing measured signals to be digitized with almost no interference, the company said.
In contrast, traditional CT detectors generate noise that reduces the quality of medical images from low-intensity signals, Siemens said. With the new detector, Siemens said it has succeeded in combining all of the signal conversion electronics on a single microchip, enabling better image quality at lower radiation doses.
When combined with the company's premium Somatom Definition Flash and Somatom Definition Edge CT scanners, the new Stellar technology provides highly detailed resolution as fine as 0.30 mm, permitting the evaluation of fine vascular structures, and improving scan quality in obese patients, Siemens said.
