Elekta and Netherlands Cancer Institute team up

Radiation oncology firm Elekta and the Netherlands Cancer Institute-Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in Amsterdam (NKI-AVL) are joining forces to advance cancer research, the organizations said.

They will work to jointly develop new solutions that combine multimodality imaging and radiotherapy in the coming years.

In collaboration with Elekta, the two entities helped develop conebeam CT (CBCT) technology and its integration with radiation therapy systems, the organizations said. And with the assistance of NKI-AVL and other clinical partners, Elekta was the first provider to commercialize CBCT with its x-ray volume imaging (XVI) technique. The latest collaborations have been in 3D and 4D innovations in image-guided radiation therapy, they said.

In light of 3 million new cancer cases in Europe each year, Elekta said its goal is to increase the effectiveness and accessibility of radiation therapy.
