Radiation therapy vendors Varian Medical Systems and Brainlab announced that they have installed a Novalis Tx radiotherapy system at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre of the Western General Hospital in Scotland.
This is the first installation of a Novalis Tx system in Scotland, and was funded as part of the National Radiotherapy Capital Equipment Programme. The system has the ability to destroy cancerous cells anywhere in the body in a single 20-minute long session.
Approximately 700 cancer patients are expected to be treated in the system's first year of installation, 100 of whom will be patients with brain tumors, according to Dr. Sara Erridge, a radiation oncologist at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre.
