Canon Europe has announced the availability of its new CR-2 Plus, a nonmydriatic retinal camera with fundus autofluorescence capabilities.
It will be demonstrated at the forthcoming European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Congress being held 17 to 21 September in Vienna. The CR-2 Plus will be available in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa during the first half of 2012, the company said.
The 18-megapixel digital camera has been adapted specifically for ophthalmic photography, and incorporates Canon's EOS digital SLR technology. The CCR-2Plus works with a wide range of ISO settings so that very low ISO speeds can be selected to produce the best possible image without compromising on quality. Its low flash mode combined with higher ISO values will not cause the pupil of an eye to constrict after a flash, enabling images to be taken in quick succession.
The CR-2 Plus includes software to optimize workflow. It is fully DICOM-compliant, and includes an option to seamlessly connect to hospital networks and practice management systems.
Fundus autofluorescence imaging for the diagnosis of retinal disease provides more information on the health of the retinal pigment epithelium. This type of imaging is used for early detection of age-related macular degeneration, other ocular diseases, and for the detection of intraocular tumors.
