The ESR, under the lead of the ESR AI Working Group, has emphasized the significance of its document, "Guiding AI in Radiology: ESR’s Recommendations for Effective Implementation of the European AI Act," published recently in Insights into Imaging.
The document offers policy recommendations on AI's integration into radiology in a way that upholds patient safety, clinical reliability, and transparency, while also fostering innovation, noted the ESR in a press release issued on 6 March.
The AI Working Group consists of leading radiologists with expertise and long-standing experience with the safe and effective use of AI in imaging and diagnostics. It developed the position statement by employing a structured, multiphase process, including literature review and collaborative thematic discussions to build consensus on key recommendations.
Prof. Dr. Elmar Kotter, PhD, ESR AI Working Group Coordinator, said the AI Act will shape the future of AI in medical imaging. He added that the recommendations in the document address key aspects such as AI literacy, high-risk classification, data governance, and human oversight.
