The jury's still out on DBT | AI's role in breast screening | Scanning the pharaohs

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Clinical implementation of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT, or 3D mammography) has been less rapid in Europe compared with North America, so for the latest perspective on DBT, it makes complete sense to take note of the experiences of a top U.S. facility.

At this week's RSNA congress in Chicago, researchers from the New York University School of Medicine gave a succinct and practical roundup of where we stand with DBT. They discussed the pros and cons and looked at where the technology is heading. Don't miss our news report in the Women's Imaging Community.

Breast cancer screening has been another hot topic at RSNA 2019. This is a fascinating area for artificial intelligence (AI) applications due to the high volumes related to breast screening, so a dedicated session was bound to generate great attention. We interviewed some of the main protagonists and asked for their views on AI in screening. Go to the Artificial Intelligence Community.

Egyptian radiology took centerstage on Tuesday and rose to the challenge exceptionally well. Discussion focused on the imaging of mummies, as well as the main challenges facing the nation's 5,150 radiologists and common diseases found in the country.

The RSNA presidential address at Sunday's early morning opening session rarely disappoints. This year's revealing talk was about the importance of patient interaction and human contact in radiology, particularly as we enter the era of AI.

Away from Chicago, the big news this week was about Agfa-Gevaert Group's decision to sell part of its healthcare IT business. This development looks set to have major implications. Industry expert Alex Green tells the full story.

Also, we have a wide-ranging interview with Dr. Pablo Valdés Solís, president of the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM), about the future of radiology.
