The U.K.'s Health Minister, Lord Warner, has set a date of early 2007 for the country to begin pilot studies of its electronic healthcare record (EHR) system, the National Health Service (NHS) Care Records Service.
The pilot studies will upload patient information onto a summary care record to enable the transfer of patient records when a person changes general practitioners, according to the government.
Another initiative announced by the Health Ministry is the establishment of a new taskforce to develop a detailed implementation plan for speeding up delivery of the EHR system. It will be chaired by an as yet to be named layperson and involve a cross-section of clinical representatives, Warner said.
The taskforce will be charged with producing a detailed action plan by the end of this year, and will also be asked to draw on the work already done in this area by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs with its Vista EHR, according to Warner.
