Ultrasound helps administer blood transfusions to sickle cell patients

St. George's Hospital in London is using ultrasound effectively to help administer blood transfusions to sickle cell patients, according to a press release issued by the U.K. Society of Radiographers (SoR).

The hospital is highlighting, in particular, the case of Neriya-May Hall, 13, who has sickle cell disease and receives transfusions every four to five weeks to replace abnormal red blood cells with donor blood. The new technique uses ultrasound to guide needles for the transfusion into her veins, which cuts the procedure time in half, the hospital said.
