Siemens Healthineers has begun construction on a new MRI superconducting magnet manufacturing plant in North Oxfordshire, England.
The €250 million facility will serve as the U.K. first production site for the vendor's DryCool technology, which minimizes the amount of helium used in MRI scanners from 1,500 liters to under a single liter, according to Siemens. The 56,000-sq-m facility will also include a research and development hub for designing and manufacturing smaller and lightweight whole-body scanners, and utilize manufacturing automation for additional capacity to help satisfy rising global demand for MRI products, according to the firm.

Siemens added that the site will be operationally carbon-neutral and will provide a range of financial, infrastructure, and environmental benefits to the local economy from its planned opening in 2026. The site is expected to support more than 1,300 skilled jobs.
The new facility is one of six current and planned Siemens Healthineers manufacturing sites in the U.K., according to Siemens.
