Hungary shows the way; digital mammo gains; Italian spinal research

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Hungary has a rich tradition in breast imaging. Not only has it produced one of Europe's pioneers and great teachers in Dr. László Tabár, who completed his medical training in Pècs and obtained his doctorate from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences before heading for Sweden, but also the country has set high standards in the training of radiologists involved in its national breast screening program.

Our Hungary correspondent, Robin Marshall, interviewed Gábor Forrai, PhD, about the current status of the screening program, and Forrai also spoke about the innovative practical test radiologists can take. After Robin's previous article on brain drain, it's a joy to read a positive article about the country's achievements. Read more at our Women's Imaging Digital Community, or click here.

The findings of some potentially significant research in digital mammography have been published online this month in European Radiology. The Dutch authors found that using local contrast optimization for image processing may increase perceived suspiciousness of breast tissue, but diagnostic accuracy may remain similar to other algorithms. They hope their research will generate new knowledge that can be used to optimize currently available image postprocessing algorithms. Get the story here.

Meanwhile, an Italian group has completed important work involving MRI of the brachial plexus, a network of nerves that sends signals from the spinal cord located in the spinal canal of the vertebral column to the shoulders, arms, and hands. Ensuring people turn up for any type of screening examination is a constant challenge. Dutch researchers have discovered that when offered virtual colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening, many more individuals accepted the invitation compared with those who were offered conventional colonoscopy. The global imaging community will make its annual pilgrimage to Chicago this weekend for the RSNA meeting, and our editorial team will bring you all the news direct from the congress. Make sure you check AuntMinnieEurope.com and AuntMinnie.com for regular updates.
