Germans develop new SiPM for PET/MRI

German researchers at the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Modular Solid State Technologies EMFT and Ketek said they have developed a more efficient silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) for use in PET/MRI systems.

The technology is designed to replace photomultiplier tubes in highly sensitive detector applications, such as PET, and allow the PET component to operate effectively in the strong magnetic field of an MRI scanner.

According to Fraunhofer EMFT, the SiPM has a greater count rate than current SiPMs, enhanced photon-detection efficiency, and can operate at lower temperature sensitivity. Ketek will produce and market the SiPM with Fraunhofer EMFT.

The SiPM technology was developed as a part of the project HESDEK (Highly Sensitive Radiation Detectors) funded by the Bavarian State Ministry.
