PET/CT & second tumors; rapid prototyping; JFR congress

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Detecting second primary tumors remains a serious clinical challenge, which means that hybrid imaging's ability to find these tumors is a highly significant development. A large Spanish study presented at this week's European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) annual congress has confirmed PET/CT's promise by providing new data about 837 examinations conducted between June 2009 and May 2010. Rapid prototyping is a widely used industrial process that converts a virtual 3D image into a physical 3D model, and Israeli radiologists have found that this technique could have medical uses by putting precise models of patient anatomy in surgeons' hands. The French national radiology congress, JFR, starts in Paris on Friday. To warm up for this major meeting, we've interviewed Dr. Sylvia Neuenschwander, president of the French Society of Radiology. Click here for our JFR preview. Also, look out for our onsite news reports from the meeting, which will appear in both English and French.

How precisely robots can be used in healthcare is open to question. Dutch researchers have evaluated their potential for performing MR-guided biopsies of the prostate, and although they conclude that the technique is not yet viable, further progress in this area appears likely. A new article published in the European Journal of Radiology has shown that adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR) technology can not only improve CT image quality but also increase the sensitivity of computer-aided detection (CAD) software for detecting lung nodules. Get the story here.

Following our popular report last week about the European Society of Radiology's white paper on personalized medicine, a visionary from Alberta in Canada, Dr. Sandy McEwan, addressed the same topic in his keynote lecture at the EANM congress. To read about his views, click here.
