AuntMinnieEurope.com Digital X-Ray Insider

Dear Digital X-Ray Insider,

An x-ray device is now available that has a detector large enough to perform full-spine images with just one exposure to the patient, and researchers from Madrid are excited that this new single-exposure machine can help to optimize patient radiation dose and reduce artifacts.

The development has important implications for pediatric cases, the authors believe. Please check out today’s top story.

“Look carefully at the review areas on a chest x-ray" is not the sort of advice given by our regular columnist Dr. Paul McCoubrie, but don't let this put you off. His entertaining new book focuses on much broader, character-developing and skill-enhancing ideas, and on practical advice that makes everyone's life easier and better. Past ESR President Prof. Adrian Brady has reviewed it for us.

In other news, a patient died last month in Cairo, Egypt, due to injuries she sustained during a fire that broke out while she was undergoing a fluoroscopy exam. Don’t miss our report.

Another tragic case occurred in Ireland, where a young woman died after an x-ray failed to identify that she had swallowed her dental plate and staff wrongly discharged her. This case has led to the implementation of a national plan of action.

To finish this newsletter on a more upbeat note, a Danish group has reported that a commercially available AI algorithm can improve the performance of junior radiologists when grading knee osteoarthritis on x-rays.

These articles are just a small selection of the material we’ve posted this year in the Digital X-Ray content area. Please check out the full list here.
