Dear Digital X-Ray Insider,

Only five electronic posters received the prestigious Magna Cum Laude award at last week's European Congress of Radiology (ECR), and arguably the most eye-catching was a practical exhibit about calcaneal fractures. Digital x-ray is able to diagnose most of these fractures, and Spanish authors diligently outlined how to spot them quickly and accurately. To find out more, click here.

In the crowded ECR exhibit hall at Austria Center Vienna, portability was the buzzword among digital radiography (DR) vendors. For a roundup of the key product innovations from the leading players, click here. Also, Samsung gave notice of its intention to grow rapidly in medical imaging with the European launch of two new low-dose DR systems. Get the story here.

In the U.K., researchers have developed a computer-based simulator for estimating radiation dose in computed radiography (CR) studies. They think their "virtual phantom" could prove more effective than physical phantoms by enabling clinicians to gauge the impact of patient anatomy when imaging parameters are changed. To learn more, click here.

The long-suspected existence of exposure creep -- in which radiation dose from CR examinations slowly rises over time -- has been documented in a long-term study of practices at an Australian teaching hospital. The study highlights the need for uniform exposure standards for CR systems manufactured by different vendors. Click here for more details.

Further coverage of the latest CR and DR developments announced at ECR 2012 will follow over the coming weeks, so make sure you check back regularly into our Digital X-Ray Community.
