Dear CT Insider,
Prompt identification and management of the pulmonary toxicity of cancer immunotherapies can be of great clinical value. And when an adverse event is suspected, high-resolution CT (HRCT) tends to be the preferred modality because chest radiography fails to detect up to one-quarter of these cases. HRCT can serve as a useful imaging biomarker to assess drug toxicity, according to new research from Barcelona, Spain.
At ECR 2019 this month, investigators from the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona received a cum laude award for their work. We've posted an article about it today.
Another presentation that generated interest at the congress came from Italian authors. They showed how they have monitored CT dose and adjusted protocols at their institution to identify the optimal parameters for reducing cancer patients' exposure to radiation from whole-body CT exams, without lowering image quality.
Meanwhile, a team from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and Heidelberg University in Heidelberg, Germany, demonstrated that an artificial intelligence algorithm provides real-time, patient-specific radiation dose estimates on single- or dual-source CT studies at an accuracy approaching the level of Monte Carlo simulations.
Lung cancer screening using low-dose CT also came under scrutiny at ECR 2019. Don't miss our video interview with Dr. Mathias Prokop, PhD, from Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
The final CT-related item to catch our eye at the congress came from radiologists at the Medical University of Vienna. They were given a magna cum laude award for explaining how to simplify the differential diagnosis of diffuse ground-glass opacifications.
Away from the Vienna meeting, Swiss researchers have performed a feasibility study with a new breast CT scanner and found that the system turned in high-quality images at low radiation dose. The combination could mean that breast CT could be ready for cancer screening.
